C235A, C235C, C235E and C2359: The SBC "Service Threshold Reached" Codes

Quick answer: On Mercedes cars with SBC brakes, fault codes C235A, C235C, C235E and C2359 all carry the Mercedes description "service threshold reached": the SBC hydraulic unit's wear monitoring has hit a limit. C235D means "check operating time of component A7/3", like C249F. None of these is fixed by a reset. The unit needs a rebuild or exchange.

You'll find these codes labelled online as motor relay faults, solenoid faults and pump motor faults. That isn't what Mercedes' own diagnostic list says. Here's the correct meaning of each, straight from the Mercedes SBC fault list.

What each code means

CodeMercedes descriptionIn plain English
C235AService threshold reachedA wear limit monitored by the SBC unit has been reached.
C235CService threshold reachedAs above: a different monitored counter, same message.
C235EService threshold reachedAs above.
C2359Service threshold reachedAs above.
C2498Service threshold reachedAs above. C2498 guide.
C235DCheck operating time of component A7/3Same wording as C249F: the unit's operating-time limit.

In other words, these are the SBC unit telling you it has reached the end of a monitored service life. They don't point at one specific broken component. That's also why they usually arrive with the grey "Service Brake! Visit Workshop!" message rather than a red warning.

How urgent are they?

They're service warnings, not an emergency in themselves, but they are not optional. The threshold exists because the unit wears: motor brushes, seals and the accumulator. Book the repair rather than living with it for months. If any of these codes appear with pressure codes such as C2131 (pressure reservoir faulty), C25D4 or C26BB (pressure supply), the unit has an active hardware fault and it's more urgent. A red brake warning means don't drive at all.

Can they be reset?

Yes, the counters can be reset with the right software, and a reset makes the warning go away. It also changes nothing inside the unit. We only do a reset (£120, no warranty) after inspection and at the customer's request, because on a worn unit it's a gamble with the brakes.

Frequently asked questions

What does C235A mean on a Mercedes?

C235A is a Sensotronic Brake Control (SBC) fault code with the Mercedes description "service threshold reached". The SBC hydraulic unit's wear monitoring has hit a limit, and the unit needs a rebuild or exchange rather than a reset.

Is C235C a motor relay fault?

No. In the Mercedes SBC fault list, C235C is "service threshold reached", the same description as C235A, C235E, C2359 and C2498. It's a wear-monitoring code, not a relay fault.

What is C235D?

C235D is "check operating time of component A7/3 (SBC hydraulic unit)", the same description as C249F. The unit has reached its monitored operating-time limit.

How much does it cost to fix C235A or C235C?

A postal rebuild of your own SBC unit is £430 with a 6-month warranty, an exchange unit is £700 with a 12-month warranty and no core return, and our mobile service is from £650 with a 12-month warranty.
