C2498 gets described online as everything from a pressure failure to a counter code. Here's what it actually is, in Mercedes' own diagnostic wording, and what to do about it.
What C2498 means
In the Mercedes diagnostic fault list, C2498 is "Service threshold reached" on the SBC system. The SBC control unit keeps track of how hard the hydraulic unit (component A7/3) has worked. When a wear threshold is crossed, it logs a service-threshold code and puts the car into the grey-warning state. C2498 belongs to a family of these codes. C235A, C235C, C235E and C2359 carry the same "service threshold reached" description.
C2498 vs C249F
| Code | Mercedes description | In plain English |
|---|---|---|
| C249F | Check operating time of component A7/3 (SBC hydraulic unit) | The lifetime actuation counter (~300,000 brake applications) has run out. |
| C2498 | Service threshold reached | The unit's wear monitoring has hit its service limit. |
They are related, and it's common to see both logged together. Neither is, on its own, a code for a pressure failure. Pressure problems show up as their own codes: C2131 (pressure reservoir faulty), C25D4 (no or insufficient pressure supply) and C26BB/C26BE (malfunction in pressure supply). If those appear alongside C2498, the unit is not just worn on paper. It has a hardware fault right now.
Can I drive with C2498?
If the dash shows the grey "Service Brake! Visit Workshop!" message, the car is in backup mode with reduced braking assistance. Drive short distances, gently, and book the repair. If you ever see a red brake warning, don't drive: stop and arrange recovery. More on this in driving with the SBC warning on.
Can C2498 just be reset?
Software exists to clear SBC service codes, and we offer a counter reset (£120). But we're honest about what it is: a reset switches the warning off and repairs nothing. The threshold exists because the unit wears, with motor brushes, seals and the accumulator all included. On a worn unit a reset is a braking-safety gamble, and the warning comes back. That's why our reset is only done after inspection, on request, and carries no warranty.
The proper fix
| Option | Price | Warranty | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Postal rebuild of your own unit | £430 | 6 months | Grey warning, you or your garage can remove and refit the unit. Keeps your car's coding. |
| Exchange unit | £700 | 12 months | You need the car back fast. Matched to your part number, no core return. |
| Mobile service | from £650 | 12 months | We do the whole job at your address, within ~200 miles of Basingstoke including London. |
| Counter reset only | £120 | None | Only after inspection, on request. It clears the warning but repairs nothing. |
Before any option, send us your full code list, not just C2498, and the part number from the unit's label. The combination of codes tells us whether this is a worn-but-working unit or one with an active pressure fault. See our full SBC fault code table.
