Mercedes CLS C219 SBC Pump: Does Yours Have It, and What to Do When It Fails

Quick answer: The Mercedes CLS C219 used SBC (Sensotronic Brake Control) from its 2004 launch until the mid-2006 facelift, when Mercedes switched it, like the E-Class, to conventional brakes. Early CLS350, CLS500 and CLS55 AMG cars have SBC. Check for "SBC" on the brake fluid cap. Repair options: £430 rebuild, £700 exchange, mobile from £650.

The CLS is built on E-Class foundations, and on the brake side that includes the SBC system. That also means it shares the E-Class's 2006 changeover, which causes a lot of confusion when owners try to buy parts.

Which CLS models have SBC?

CLSSBC?
C219 from launch (2004) to the mid-2006 facelift, e.g. CLS350, CLS500, CLS55 AMGYes
C219 after the mid-2006 changeover, including the CLS63 AMGNo, conventional brakes
Later CLS generations (C218 onwards)No

Because the changeover happened part-way through 2006, the registration year isn't a reliable guide.

The 10-second check: open the bonnet and look at the brake fluid reservoir cap. If it has "SBC" printed on it, the car has Sensotronic Brake Control. No SBC on the cap, no SBC pump — whatever the logbook, the advert or the internet says.

Common CLS SBC symptoms

  • Grey "Service Brake! Visit Workshop!": backup mode. Drive with care, short distances only, and book the repair. See can I drive with the SBC warning on?
  • Red brake warning: stop and arrange recovery.
  • A softer or longer pedal than usual, or the pump running more than normal.

Fault codes

The CLS logs the same SBC codes as the W211. The ones we see most:

  • C249F: check operating time of component A7/3 (the lifetime counter has run out). C249F explained.
  • C2498, C235A, C235C, C235E: service threshold reached (the unit's wear monitoring). C2498 explained.
  • C2131: pressure reservoir faulty, a genuine hardware fault in the unit.
  • C226F / C22EF: internal fault in the SBC control unit (A7/3n1).

Getting the right unit

A CLS SBC unit is chosen by the Bosch and Mercedes numbers on its label, never by "CLS" or the year. We check those numbers against your existing unit before anything is dispatched. See our part-number list or send a photo of the label on WhatsApp.

A rebuilt original unit keeps the car's coding. Every SBC unit needs a diagnostic brake bleed after fitting (bleeding procedure), and an exchange unit also needs initialising.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Mercedes CLS have SBC brakes?

The first-generation CLS (C219) had SBC from its 2004 launch until the mid-2006 facelift. Cars built after that, including the CLS63 AMG, use conventional brakes, as do later CLS generations. Check the brake fluid cap for the "SBC" marking.

Does the CLS55 AMG have SBC?

Yes. The CLS55 AMG was built on the pre-2006 C219 and uses Sensotronic Brake Control. The CLS63 AMG that replaced it arrived after the changeover and uses conventional brakes.

How much is a CLS SBC pump repair?

A postal rebuild of your own unit is £430 with a 6-month warranty, an exchange unit matched to your part number is £700 with a 12-month warranty and no core return, and our mobile service is from £650 with a 12-month warranty.
