The R230 SL is where SBC started. It launched in 2001 as the first car with Sensotronic Brake Control, and unlike the E-Class and CLS it never gave it up. Every R230, from the early SL350 and SL500 to the last SL63 and SL65 AMG in 2011, stops using the same brake-by-wire principle. Many of these cars are now weekend cars that sit for long spells, which suits SBC badly. We see plenty of them on the bench.
Does my SL have SBC?
If it's an R230, yes, whatever the year or engine. The newer R231 SL that replaced it in 2012 does not use SBC.
The 10-second check: open the bonnet and look at the brake fluid reservoir cap. If it has "SBC" printed on it, the car has Sensotronic Brake Control. No SBC on the cap, no SBC pump — whatever the logbook, the advert or the internet says.
SBC warning or ABC warning? Don't mix them up
Many R230s also have Active Body Control (ABC), Mercedes' hydraulic suspension. It's a completely separate hydraulic system with its own pump, fluid and warnings. An ABC warning is a suspension fault and has nothing to do with the SBC brake pump, and the reverse is true too. If the message mentions the brakes ("Service Brake! Visit Workshop!"), it's SBC. If it mentions ABC or the car sits low, it's the suspension.
R230 SBC symptoms
- Grey "Service Brake! Visit Workshop!" The system is in backup mode. You still have brakes but reduced assistance, so drive short distances with care and book the repair.
- Red brake warning. Stop. Don't drive it. Arrange recovery.
- A longer, softer pedal than the firm, instant feel a healthy SBC car has.
- The pump running more often or for longer as it struggles to hold pressure.
- A warning after the car has stood for a while, a common R230 story, because the system self-tests when you open the door and start up.
Fault codes we see on R230s
| Code | Mercedes description | What it means in practice |
|---|---|---|
| C249F | Check operating time of component A7/3 | The lifetime counter (~300,000 brake actuations) has run out. See our C249F guide. |
| C2498 | Service threshold reached | The unit's own wear monitoring has tripped. Often logged with C249F. See our C2498 guide. |
| C235A / C235C / C235E | Service threshold reached | Same wear family. See our C235A/C235C guide. |
| C2131 | Pressure reservoir faulty | The accumulator inside the hydraulic unit has failed. A genuine hardware fault. |
| C25D4 / C26BB | No, insufficient or faulty pressure supply | The unit can't supply pressure properly. Treat as serious. |

Matching the right unit to an SL
SBC units are not "one size fits all SL". The unit carries a label with a Bosch number (0265 960 0xx) and a Mercedes A-number, and those numbers decide what fits, not the model name or year. Fit the wrong unit and you trade a pump fault for a communication fault. That's why we check the label on your existing unit before anything ships. Our part-number cross-reference lists the common numbers, or WhatsApp us a photo of the label.
R230 SBC repair options and prices
| Option | Price | Warranty | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Postal rebuild of your own unit | £430 | 6 months | Grey warning, you or your garage can remove and refit the unit. Keeps your car's coding. |
| Exchange unit | £700 | 12 months | You need the car back fast. Matched to your part number, no core return. |
| Mobile service | from £650 | 12 months | We do the whole job at your address, within ~200 miles of Basingstoke including London. |
| Counter reset only | £120 | None | Only after inspection, on request. It clears the warning but repairs nothing. |
If we rebuild your own unit, it keeps your car's coding, so no recoding is needed after refit. Any SBC unit needs a diagnostic-tool brake bleed after fitting; see our SBC bleeding procedure. An exchange unit also needs initialising. With around 140 bar in the system, this is not a gravity-bleed job.
