AMG Models With SBC: E55, CLS55, SL55, SL63 and SL65

Quick answer: The AMG Mercedes with SBC brakes are the E55 AMG (W211/S211), the CLS55 AMG (C219) and every R230 SL AMG: the SL55, SL63 and SL65. The later E63 AMG and CLS63 AMG came after Mercedes dropped SBC from those ranges in 2006 and use conventional brakes. An AMG badge doesn't change the rule: match the unit by part number.

AMG owners often assume their car has some special brake system that only a dealer can touch. The braking hardware (discs, calipers) is AMG-specific. The SBC hydraulic unit that runs it is the same Sensotronic Brake Control system as the rest of the range, and it fails for the same reasons.

Which AMGs have SBC?

The 10-second check: open the bonnet and look at the brake fluid reservoir cap. If it has "SBC" printed on it, the car has Sensotronic Brake Control. No SBC on the cap, no SBC pump — whatever the logbook, the advert or the internet says.

Why AMG SBC units work hard

SBC counts its own brake actuations and flags a service threshold at around 300,000 (fault code C249F). How quickly a car gets there depends on how it's driven and how much the system is asked to do. A car that sits for months and is then used enthusiastically is the typical AMG pattern. The standing time is hard on the hydraulics, and the enthusiastic driving is hard on the counter.

Symptoms and codes

  • Grey "Service Brake! Visit Workshop!" means backup mode. Drive gently and book the repair. Red brake warning means don't drive.
  • C249F: check operating time of the SBC unit (lifetime counter).
  • C2498 / C235A / C235C / C235E: service threshold reached. What these mean.
  • C2131: pressure reservoir faulty. C25D4 / C26BB: pressure supply faults.

AMG badge, same rule: part number first

We never sell an SBC unit on the strength of "it's an E55" or "it's an SL55". The label on your unit gives a Bosch number and a Mercedes A-number, and that's what we match. A mismatched unit can throw CAN communication faults (C24DB, CAN communication with the ESP control unit) instead of fixing anything. Check our part numbers or WhatsApp a photo of the label.

Frequently asked questions

Does the E55 AMG have SBC?

Yes. The E55 AMG (W211 saloon and S211 estate) uses Sensotronic Brake Control like other pre-facelift E-Class models. The E63 AMG that replaced it in 2006 uses conventional brakes.

Does the SL63 AMG have SBC?

Yes. The SL63 AMG is an R230 SL, and the R230 kept SBC for its whole production run to 2011. The SL55 and SL65 AMG have it too.

Is an AMG SBC pump different from a normal one?

The SBC system is the same Sensotronic Brake Control used across the range, but units differ by part number. What fits your car is decided by the Bosch and Mercedes numbers on your existing unit's label, not by the AMG badge, so we check the label before anything ships.
